The Norwegian landscaping company Svein Boasson AS has long had one clear goal: no chemicals – only sustainable weed control.
For several years, the company experienced inconsistent results with hot water treatments. One of the main reasons was that the hot water cooled down quickly due to contact with the ground and surrounding air, which significantly affected the results.
Crister Andersen, Project Engineer at Svein Boasson AS, explains:
“During dry periods, we noticed that weeds quickly started to regrow around the treated areas. This happened because the water also acted as nourishment for existing weeds and seed capsules.”
Strong Results with Spuma
“We tested several machines, and after using Spuma for just one or two weeks, we saw that it worked perfectly,” says Crister Andersen.
With Spuma, the company achieved better and longer-lasting results. Fewer treatments were needed – even after the first application.

Taking Weed Control to the Next Level
Crister Andersen considers Spuma a solution that takes thermal weed control with hot water to the next level compared to traditional hot water systems.
“I believe the key difference lies in the combination of foam and the correct water temperature. The foam helps retain the heat for a longer time, while the precise high temperature immediately destroys or weakens the cell structure of the weeds. It also prevents weed seeds from germinating. This delivers highly satisfying results,” he explains.
Another advantage is visibility. The foam makes it easy to see which areas have already been treated – something that can be challenging with traditional hot water methods.
“When working across large areas, our operators often struggled to see which sections had already been treated, especially since the ground is often wet here in Bergen,” says Andersen.
Svein Boasson initially tested traditional hot water treatments on cobblestone surfaces where grass and weeds had grown between the stones. Then, they used Spuma on the same surface – the results speak for themselves.
A Highly Versatile Machine
Overall, Crister Andersen highlights that Spuma is easy to operate. The user-friendly design allows operators to start the machine and control the treatment using just a few buttons, ensuring optimal performance.
In addition, the machine offers much more than weed control.
Svein Boasson AS also uses it for cleaning tasks, including harbor cleaning during winter: “We use the machine most of the year – often up to 16 hours a day. We use it on all kinds of surfaces, not just for weed removal. Even on rooftops, it maintains pressure at heights of up to 10 meters. That’s pretty impressive,” says Andersen.
